House De Vijlder by META
Your kids are out of the house, you both have a home office and to top it off you just bought a building plot in front of a nature reserve. That's the situation in which de Vijlder family approached META architecture office. Their question: design us a house with an atmosphere which is open to the inside while closed towards the street. The result: I Love Belgium worthy architecture!
Compared with its neighbours, this 12 years old house still shouts "contemporary architecture". The regular concrete frame with simple brickwork and standard windows give it a bunker-like coolness. Inside the house, all the live and work areas are concentrated around a central core, in which you can find the kitchen and sanitary spaces.
Al the primary spaces have a direct relation with the outside, except the duplex which serves as musicroom and library. Together with the bedrooms these are the only functions on the second floor.
The house itself refers plan-wise (service and servant room in a clear contrast) and material wise (visible concrete, brick work inside and outside, steel and glass) towards the architecture of iconic American architect Louis Kahn: rational, durable and prosaically in one.
While referring Kahn, the Meta-architects created an iconic house in Herentals which will stand the test of (architectural) time. We like!
