As you may have noticed, the I Love Belgium team is based in Brussels. So when we stumbled on the blog Visual Brussels, we immediately related to the topic. It even got more interesting when we figured out that Visual Brussels is more then just a photography blog. Instead it’s an ongoing visual survey and process by artist Bernd Kleinheisterkamp.

Its aim is to create an informative picture language, based on documentary photography. A reason why the images are rather visual proposals than artistic embodiments. The request is to step beyond personal expression and to use the parameters of photography to show the environment in its obviousness.

Bernd uses his blog as a sketch book to show himself where his attention is going to, what keeps coming back or is getting repetitive. It is a tool for Bernd to empty his mind. This translates in a desire for beautiful pictures, unconsciously filled with clichés. Once his mind is empty he can have a clearer sight and work on what really matters.

The I Love Belgium team hopes he continues with this beautiful process. Visual Brussels is filled with images that are oh so recognizable when living in Brussels: the dirt, the mix match of architecture, the unexpected details, the melancholy, the beauty … Although we could have posted every single image, we’ve made a strong selection.
