Tom Schamp Illustrations

Tom Schamp Illustrations Playboy Humo NRC handelsblad I Love Belgium Blog Imagination, acrylic paint and cardboard: ingredients for Tom Schamp‘s outspoken illustrations. Whether his assignments come from reknown children’s book or from naughty magazines like Playboy, his style speaks to all.

Growing up in Brussels, he studied Applied Arts at the Sint-Lukas Instituut in Brussels, after this he spent another year studying Graphics in Poland. This gave him the opportunity to experiment with several ideas he’d had in mind for a while, gradually developing a style of his own.

A style recognized by the humoristic details, a love for strange objects and the use of colour. All these different elements of the illustration are hand-drawn on separate pieces of cardboard, which later get scanned to be puzzled together digitally. Forming the perfect mix between craft and technology.

Tom’s assignments come from an international mix of customers, including Humo magazine, Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad and various ad agencies. Yet he’s most known for his children book illustrations, making over 15 books in 5 years.

The I Love Belgium team is in an overdrive Christmas spirit, so we added the animated version of his latest children’s book “Otto in de Sneeuw / Vive la Neige”. The video was created by Canvas for an episode of the documentary series “De Vormgevers”, which focused on the creative process he uses for creating illustrations.
