The Reference – La Cantine de la Ville

The Marolles district in Brussels is one the most cosy neigbourhoods to walk around. The Marollen, originally a working class neighbourhood but  getting more and popular with hipsters young and old, hides some great lunch places.

One of them is ‘La Cantine de la Ville’. It’s a no-nonsense hangout with a colourful interior and honest food. Their specialty is home-made fishsticks but I went for the ‘Salade Liégoise’. A salad with  green beans,  bacon bits, green salad and potatoes. The chef at ‘La Cantine de la Ville’ added his own touch to this classic: a perfectly poached egg.

And yes, it worked. The taste of the egg blended perfectly with the green beans (done but still crisp) and the rest of the ingredients. Some olive oil, a little vinegar, pepper and salt was the perfect seasoning for this dish. A small applause for the bread that came with the salad. It’s a long time ago that I’ve tasted bread this good. Next time the I Love Belgium team is going for the fish sticks!
