Yesterday in the Belgian newspapers: traditional local pubs are disappearing. Immediately the splendid documentary photography of Jimmy Kets popped in mind. Back in 2008 Jimmy went around Belgium to photograph these jewels of popular cultural heritage. Once again we went through the photos, and when we got to the last ones we fell in love with the floor photography!
The interiors of these local pubs may be a mix match of decades, styles and personal belongings, they all have one thing in common: great historical floors. In his crusade for local pub photography, Jimmy noticed this fact and dedicated several pictures to it. We see extraordinary floor patterns, colours and styles combined with the pub owners/customers feet. Adding just that extra bit of soul to the picture.
Let’s now hope that the popularity of these pubs will rise once more, so that the next generation can enjoy these great popular cultural and social places! The I Love Belgium teams advice? Go to one of the many small villages and look for a pub in the neighbourhood of the church, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
