Antwerp-based photographer Jan Kempenaers toured from 2006 to 2009 the ex-Yugoslavia region to photograph the abandoned monuments commissioned by former dictator Tito. The series of mysterious objects, called Spomeniks, capture the beauty of these powerful yet melancholic monumental sculptures. Once attracting millions of visitors each year, today these monuments are a vague reminder of their symbolic meaning: commemorating Yugoslavian WWII battle fields.
