What happens with an empty suitcase? Option number 1: you’ll throw it somewhere in a dark corner of a room and let it gather some dust. Option number 2: you reinvent it into a multifunctional desirable and stackable design object. That’s exactly what designer Maarten De Ceulaer did for his Design Academy graduation project four years ago. Today he continues ” The Leather Collection” with brand new edition titled “Chest of Suitcases”. Read the rest of this entry »

A pile of polyethylene seats, metal structures, mirrors and walls, … Rubbish you say? What if we told you that this rubbish was once the podium on which 40 photographers gathered for the Prada FW 2011 fashion shows or the pink and green polyethylene foam seats which were used during the SS 2008 and FW 2010 Prada fashion shows. Rotor sets up an investigation of the architectural and scenographic elements realized for the fashion show sets designed by Prada and OMA for more than a decade. Read the rest of this entry »

Haider Ackermann at Pitti
Haider Ackermann, one of Belgium’s hottest names on the Paris runway calendar, will stage his first major runway show outside of France this summer at Pitti Imagine, in an important coup for the Florence, Italy-based trade show.
Colombian-born Ackermann launched his eponymous label in 2001 and immediately won acclaim for his avant-garde draping, subtle use of leather and fashion sensibility which borders on abstract art. A graduated of the famed Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Ackermann made his runway debut in Paris in 2002. After quickly garnering critical kudos, Ackermann won the prestigious Swiss Textiles Award in 2004.
Though primarily a men’s fashion event, the Florentine trade fair has developed a growing importance in women’s fashion and this season will mark the 6th edition of Pitti W. Since its launch, Pitti has always staged two large runway shows or fashion events curated by major league international designers, one for women, one for men. Recent guests have included Giambattista Valli, Proenza Schouler, Thom Browne and Adam Kimmel. Any invitation to show in Pitti is regarded as an honor and confirmation that a brand or designer is a key player or creator of merit in the world of fashion. Check out I Love Belgium’s runway review of Ackermann’s Fall/Winter 2010 collection.

I Love Belgium will fly over to check out the most talented Belgians. We will certainly pay a visit to the Droog Design exhibit ‘Everything must go’.

“Can you hand over my pill box? You’re a doll”. Do these words ring a bell? Grandfathers and grandmothers all over the world use these exact phrases to keep their general health going. We all know these less-then-exiting organizers: cheap-looking, industrial plastic containers who help with the organization, timing and intake of pills. That’s why designer
