Knit One, Purl One

Baines sweater I Love Belgium BlogWinter is back, we just feel like slipping on a warm but nonetheless elegant sweater. If only we could find the time and the patience to knit! Isabelle Baines knitwear handmade creations are designed with fine and resistant wool. Since her childhood, knitwear became her passion and she managed to revisit sweaters and accessories with a very refined style.

Mixing navy blue, black and grey with touch of warm colors, her talented works translate a great deal of elegance of handcraft and delicacy.

Her inspirations sources are countless.  Daughter and sister of architects, she reproduced meticulous finishing in her clothings. After studying at La Cambre, then at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, and after numerous travels, she started working as costumes designer for theatres in Brussels,Paris and Geneva. Isabelle Baines also reveals a great sense of humor shaping creases of trousers like an elephant trunk for instance. She used one picture of a Congolese soldier as a starting point for one of her winter collections.

With her sister Sophie, Isabelle Baines opened up her first boutique in Brussels in 1986. 17 years later, she launched a knitting workshop with two other talented women. Between the high wool reels, the knitting machines and her boutique, she likes to create a close relationship with her customers. The I love Belgium team felt seduced by her unique and timeless style.

Don’t miss Isabelle Baines exhibition “a knitting workshop” in Brussels at the Museum of Costume and Lace. Until 31 December 2011, Isabelle Baines invites you to explore her intimate knitwear universe. You will discover a real “craftsman” designer.
