Pete randy is a lover not a fighter, pete randy is a younger not an older, pete randy is a singer not a songer. That’s how 21-year old Belgian singer-songwriter Pete Randy introduces himself on his MySpace. The talented musician used be the lead singer of Belgian band Water in the basement but he crossed the canal to try his luck in the big city. I Love Belgium picked his brain.
Pete, what’s the first thing that you do when you wake up in the morning?
Look around and try to remember where I am. Since I broke up with my boyfriend I don’t really have a home anymore so lately I’m sleeping on friends couches, which I don’t mind. Once I’ve figured out where I am and that I am safe, I’ll try to get back to sleep. hmmmm sleeeeeeeppppp….
Can you remember your dreams and if yes, what do you dream about?
I can always remember my dreams but ofcourse, not completely. Lately they have been very sexual and then they turn out to be very dark and theatrical, lots of huge nature scenes, tall people with dark sharp eyes etcetera… I guess I can figure out what that means but I won’t bother you with that, hah. If you wanted to know if I dream about being a huge popstar then yes, I do from time to time, and when I am awake, even more :)
You call yourself a singer-songwriter. What do you love more: your guitar or your beeps and blieps?
That is such a hard question. Without thinking I’d say beeps’n'blieps, because I used to be in an indie rock’n'roll band and we tried to be cool and looking back on it now it was such a huge big lie, really rock’n'roll has been such a huge big lie. Afterwards I hated my guitar, I hated playing live and having to play every note right (which I completely understand if you want to sound good live haha but I much rather enjoy jumping around on stage, not worrying where my arms and hands are flapping around) so I didn’t touch my guitar for a very long time. I grew up with pop music and I feel home in all its electronic sounds so when I got my keyboard I felt more than blessed, but every now and then when I pick up my guitar it feels so strange, cos it sounds so warm and simple and real.. so I dunno, there are two pete’s inside of me :)
You left little Belgium to make it across the canal, what are the biggest differences between UK-people and Belgium?
UK-people are AL-WAYS FUNNY! I don’t get it. Like every joke they make sounds like they have been thinking about it for half an hour. And all I can do is put my legs behind my head. Apart from that they are much much much more social, always in the mood for parties and they don’t complain as much as we do in Belgium. Also, the bigger part of the incrowd actually has good taste !
And last question: why do you love Belgium?
SUPER easy question! MY FRIENDS! there are no people like them in the whole wide world :) and I’m not trying to be cheesy, I’m serious. I left Antwerp because I had some complicated situations with people there and I thought it would be better elsewhere, but it’s not. People’s stories are the same everywhere and there are certain things that can’t be talked about everywhere but I still feel like I won’t ever have better friends than I have in Antwerp, who get my kind of humour, know why I do this or that, tell me when I’m wrong etc etc, and you know how important friendship is :) oh right, and I love Belgium cos it’s so much cheaper than London! And hmmmmmm bicky burgerssssssssss (note: a Bicky Burger is a burger you can only buy in a typical Belgian fry shop)
