Ghent-based photographer Stefanie Geerts caught our attention with her stunning Human Escape series. These painting-like pictures make use of old film rolls, hence the beautiful colour palettes and surprising distortion. They capture the beauty of commercial venues with doubtful scenery such as punk festivals, fairgrounds and medieval markets.
Stefanie goes to these places and observes the extremes within certain subcultures such as the Goth scene. After this she captures and manipulates the questionable taste levels by focusing on what’s essential and overlaps these key-elements. Instead of photoshopping this creative process, she works on the spot with the help of the old film rolls.
You can almost call it Instagram avant la lettre. The difference? The result: a non-generic imagery which can be interpreted as a true riddle. This undefined-ness comes from the almost ghost like individuals and their blurry surroundings. As we obviously love it, we made a small selection of the portray pictures within the series.
