Fashion students immediately starting their own collection immediately after graduating can be considered crazy or very courageous, but if you have such a strong concept as Louise Leconte, it’s very natural. Louise graduated in 2012 from La Cambre Mode in Brussels with her Jeanne d’Arc inspired collection.

Her inspiration came from a visit to the Metropolitan Museum in New York where she admired the permanent collection of armors. It came to her that an armor had something very feminine, accentuating the chest and the hips. The link between a woman in armor and Jeanne d’Arc was quickly made.

Her graduation collection of monochrome silhouettes in black and white was constructed with two contrasting materials: leather, more masculin and heavy, and organza, transparent, light and very feminine. Underneath you can watch a movie Louise made about her collection in which she stars herself (she’s the perfect portrayal of her collection: a strong, confident woman).

The collection’s star item was without any doubt her shield bag. A moulded shield in black leather that became an instant it-bag. Louise questions why a woman buys it-bags. Is it because it makes herself feel better? Does she use it as a shield to protect her? Or does she want to belong to a certain group (or army).

After her graduation she continued exploring leather artisanry and she developed different versions of the shield bag. Now you also have a smaller version and a shield wallet with practical shield mirrors. A collection of statement pieces to protect ourself in the urban jungle we all live in.

It was printing firm Drukta and mailing company Formail who approached Five AM with this brief, a location, a limited budget and shed loads of ideas. The kortrijk-based design atelier supplied the solution by implementing shipping containers in an unusual way!

One of the main requirements was to stimulate interaction between the offices and the work floor, which also had to be experienced by visiting clients and suppliers. As the budget for the 4000 square meters was limited, Five AM came up with the idea of placing 13 refurbished second hand shipping containers. Encapsulating these containers within the existing building, resulted in a perfect interaction between office and workspace while creating an unique experience for both visitors, workers and office staff. In reality this translates in an office plan where bosses can see their employees (and vice versa) while the visitors can explore an impressive panorama of the production hall

Even from the outside a visual statement was made: three containers pop out of the unused yet existing loading docks. This doesn’t only serve as an eye-catcher, but also draws in as much natural light as possible. Although the interior of these containers was kept sober, some of them received a bright yellow paint job to brighten up the surrounding concrete shell. A perfect example of how wear house design can turn from dull into smart with just a few architectural nips and tucks!

It almost seems to be an essential in the portfolio of star designers and architects. The cutlery design of Isaïe Bloch, founder of Eragatory, elevates this young designer to the same level as those mentioned above! With a background in experimental architecture and Additive manufacturing, Isaïe suprised the I Love Belgium team with his cutlery proposal!

Key elements in this design set was the notion of decay, ornamental and aesthetic excess as in former rococo and barock times, moments of collapse and a balance in between etiquette dining and painful torture tools. By subverting the logic of perfection and beauty, non-perfect images coming from controlled methodologies were generated. What used to be about mastering the result of a non-perfect process is now about the production of monstrosity and the grotesque throughout very accurate mechanisms, like 3d printing which is is used to produce these spoons, forks and knives.

As cutlery is unique in its ability to sustain time and travel the globe as a piece of personal history, we can expect to see these pieces in a future world where remarkable aesthetics are still admired and praised as we do today!

Caroline Van Hoek is a Ghent native who has always intrigued the I Love Belgium. We met her first in at her apartment in the picturesque artist village Sint-Martens-Latem where she hosted a dinner. In the middle of the dinner a soprano started to sing an aria, and than we knew; this was not a random dinner. Although she’s very analytical (with a background in insurances), she’s a very spiritual (she’s a qualified yogi) and creative person. In Brussels she found her creative outlet.

Away from shopping streets, in a quiet area behind the Avenue Louise amongst other art galeries, she opened her own eponymous gallery. Previously a grocery store, the outside facade has been left exactly as it was, to honor what it represents. The local shop around the corner, the close contact with the clientele, the seasonal availability of goods, the limited number of groceries and the respect for the individuality.

The galery exhibits the creative potential of the artist in its entirety through unique and specially commissioned pieces made within the largest interpretation of the word jewelry showing wearable creations but also design and objects within the world of adornment. The specialty is contemporary jewelry and silverware, to be interpreted in its broadest form showing the entire universe of adornment. The I Love Belgium team of the gems (figuratively and literally speaking) she showcases in her gallery. If you’re in the neigbhourhood (or if you’re in Brussels, it’s true destination shopping), drop by and get sucked into her universe.

It’s finally Summer in Belgium! Everywhere people heave a sigh of relief. After a hard Winter and a lousy Spring, the sun has found her way to our country. And what Belgians love to do when it’s good weather? They love to be in traffic jams…euh they love to go to the Belgian coast, which is a 65 kilometre long stretch of sandy coastline and has 15 resorts, each with its own character and unique atmosphere.

Also Belgian beaches have quirky habits. When you’re relaxing on your beach towel, you’ll most likely hear somebody yellin’ “Bouuuullllllllllessss de Berlinnnn”. Don’t be afraid, you don’t have to evacuate the beach, the guy with the yellow box on his hat is just selling Boules de Berlin or Berliners, a kind of doughnut (without a hole in the middle) made from sweet yeast dough fried in fat or oil, with a marmalade or pastry cream filling (or both) and usually icing, powdered sugar or conventional sugar on top.

According to the legend, it was invented in 1756 by a Berlin pastry chef who wanted to join the army of Frederick the Great as a cannoneer. Eventually he was recruited in the army but as a…pastry chef. To give himself a kind of ‘cannoneer feeling’ he created the Berliner.

This is not a recent phenomenon, the Boules de Berlin have a whole history behind them. Already on May 22nd 1905, Rodolphe Dies from Brussels got the permission to sell Boules de Berlin on the beach. Why he wanted to sell them? Nobody knows! Maybe Belgians have something with balls (think of the Atomium and the famous Belgian billiar balls After the First World War the name of Boules de Berlin was changed to Boules de l’Yser, referring to the river Ijzer (or Yser in French). Nowadays everybody is talking about Boules de Berlin again but there’s a clear difference between the two: the Boule the Berlin is sprinkled with caster sugar and filled with jam or marmelade while the Boules de l’Yser are filled with pastry cream and sprinkled with icing sugar (the I Love Belgium team already ate them injected with pastry cream and marmelade at the same time too).

The street vendors are mostly students and it’s one of the hardest Summer jobs around since they have to carry a heavy wooden box on their head or a wooden tray hanging around their shoulders which they have to carry all along the beach during hot Summer days. So give these guys a break and indulge in one of these Boules when you’re on the beach, one won’t ruin your swimsuit figure.

As a result the iconic “Crème Sorcière” was born! Word of mouth reassured the cream and other Delbôve beauty products a loyal costumer base throughout several generations. This anonymous brand was a well kept secret until one of those loyal costumers, Gina d’Alsembourg, decided to redevelop the Delbôve brand for a 21st century audience.

So how do you re-launch an almost forgotten all-Belgian brand? As a smart business lady Gina trusted the overall concept, from graphic design to packaging and shop interior to art director Christophe Remy. His background in cinematography and art history served him well in the search for Delbôve’s facelift! Add his passion for fashion and his knowledge in restoration of period style properties and his work for Delbôve results in an instant classic.

Remarkable in this project is the uniformity of the rebranding. Wether you take the old school pharmacy packaging, the refined logo design or the art-deco inspired interior of the flagship store, all the elements seem to have grown out of a rich brand heritage. As if Christophe himself created an imaginary Delbôve archive out of which he could mix and match. The I Love Belgium team has one word for that ”Sorcier!”.

Do you want to see Christophe’s work in real life and get some more information about the Belgian made beauty products? Then pay a visit to the flagship shop located at the Rue de l’Abbaye 67 in uptown Brussels!

Belgians love their food. I still have to meet the first person who visited Belgium who told me he had bad food. So quality is there but how to present that quality in a creative way is another matter.

Food photography is complex, it’s not only about color, setting and scenography, but also about timing and innovation. The latter is something Kris Desmedt and Erik Vernieuwe mastered very well. Kris is a fashion photographer shooting for L’Officiel, Grazia, Standardmagazine,… Erik Vernieuwe is a stylist extraordinaire and a master in creating moods.

Next to their daily occupations the duo has been doing a series of creative culinary imagery. Their pictures are not only very tasty but they’re full of energy, movement and humor, things you cannot always find in classic food photography. Their double meaning, wit or combination with special props bring an instant smile on your face. A plate of pasta, a fruit tartelette or a simple tomato soup,…all become visual artworks. Their work will say so much more than our words, so feast your eyes on this visual buffet!

We admit, we don’t do enough about Belgian music on I Love Belgium (you can still hit us up to become an I Love Belgium music editor, but sorry we cannot pay you since we are an non-profit Belgium-loving platform). But when we do it, we really like someone! That’s why we want to introduce you to Juriji Der Klee.

We first bumped into him in Paris during Jean-Paul Lespagnard‘s second presentation during fashion week. Who was that androgynous boy in total look Jean-Paul Lespagnard? After that we saw him several times in the buzzing Brussels nightlife and than came the answer: that mysterious boy with an angelic face, is a singer, composer, songwriter and melodist.

At the age of 15 he gets interested in video editing and at the age of 18 he starts taking singing lessons. No pop queen here, but a classically trained countertenor. He is fascinated by Klaus Nomi, Nina Hagen and David Bowie but he grew up with Madonna, Daft Punk and Mecano. Immersed in pop culture, he creates electro-pop music away from the mainstream, where lyrical singing is made sacred again, transcending sounds, genders and eras. His music is like a paradox. His beats make you want to dance but his voice makes you want to listen.

He is obsessed by fashion and performs and parades in the collections of young designers such as Jean-Paul Lespagnard, Louise Leconte and Gioia Seghers making him a muse, model and allround Belgian fashion ambassador. But music is what makes him tick the most. He will soon be launching an EP called Broken with four songs: Into the Light, Music, Pearl and Who am I. You’ll have to wait until the full EP is released but underneath you can already watch a teaser video made for the EP featuring the song Music. The song is an adaptation of Henry Purcell’s Music for a while, the lyrics are inspired by John Dryden’s Oedipus. Get ready to be enchanted.
The results could be compared to the six animations made by Ghent-based motion designer and Illustrator Kristof Luyckx. Kristof made these for the graphic festival Beyonderground where the animations announced the start of a lecture. As the festival focused on the relation between visuals and music, the animated musical interludes were a sublime match!

These creatures are a perfect translation of Kristofs inspirations such as weird people, boring stuff, small talk and facial hair! And this immediately explains the dry sense of humor added to these animations. Whether you have a long-necked red and black demonic bird which smashes its head to create the tones for ‘Enjoy The Silence’ by Depeche Mode or a devilish Pino-the-bird like siamese twin rocking Guns N’ Roses’ Paradise City, it will be hard to suppress a smile!

The I Love Belgium team just wonders how one of these creatures would sound and behave when covering Beyonce’s Single Ladies…. Who knows, maybe this inspires Kristof for a bigger, broader series of rock’n monsters and a true youtube hit could take place.

The story of Generous reads like a sweet fairytale. Co-founder of Christophe Harou wanted to find gluten free bread and pastry in Brussels because his doctor advised him to stop eating gluten and that’s how he ended up with Aurélie and Jean-Benoît at L’Arrière-Cuisine. Avid I Love Belgium readers may recall our raving review about their bakery. He became a regular customer at at their cute tea-room, started talking and brainstorming with Aurélie and Jean-Benoît and Generous was born.

The Generous bakery offers a range of handmade, organic and gluten free products. Organic, gluten-free but…full of taste! Their workshop is located in Brussels, at the crossing of the canal and the Senne river in a classic industrial building that used to host a dry cleaning unit. But now the space has been transformed into a laboratory of taste.

Their first range of products is a range of cookies with witty names such as Céline Citron (lemon butter shortbread), Charlotte Chocolat (chocolate cookies with Belgian chocolate chips, hazelnuts and fleur de sel), Sylvain Speculoos (a spiced shortcrust biscuit with buckwheat flower), Victor Vanille (vanilla butter shortbread) and Nicole Noisette (hazelnut croquant). And although everything is organic and gluten free, don’t expect the typical boring, hippie, health food non-aesthetics packaging. The cookies are in a cute white bag with illustrations by Antwerp artist Jens Claessens. If you don’t like cookies, you would even buy them for the packaging.

For Aurélie and Jean-Benoît, who are the baking professors, the gluten is no more an obstacle but an inspiration in their search for new recipes. They use different flours for different taste, some are from here, such as buckwheat, others from elsewhere, such as millet and tapioca. All their products are organic certified and their suppliers, mainly craftsmen from Belgium engaged in organic agriculture, share their beliefs and passion for good products. And after the cookies, people want more! They’re asking for bread, cakes and other pastry so these pastry chefs have a lot of culinary challenges ahead.

And of course there’s the taste verdict: do they taste organic? Do they taste healthy? We admit: we never had cookies full of flavor. Our favorites are Céline Citron and Charlotte Chocolat. We suggest you try them out yourself, they’re in over 150 organic stores and they’re even sold in Switzerland and Paris (and they’re sold in our favourite Belgian bakery Le Saint-Aulaye). And if they concoct more deliciousness like that, we’re sure they will expand even more quickly.

He met the brave team of Low architecten who took on the quest to design easy and livable spaces with one square window positioned towards the house of the sister next door. No, we wont continue with a Hans and Gretel-like story, instead we’ll talk serious architecture!

Although the house may look like a massive brick volume from the outside, the house completely opens up to the nature at the backside. Much like the extreme tactile constructions of renowned Belgian brutalist Juliaan Lampens. The comparison could even be extended towards his extreme attention for natural light, his complete open plan and integration of made to measure furniture.

Projected on Patrick’s house, one could say that the Low architects hinted towards the bunker-typology with two emerging, zenital openings. One opening creates a patio connected to the bedroom, while the other lets natural light splash into the living space. By continuing the roof covering in the same range of brick coloring, the idea of a ‘skin’ is complete. Just as Lampens states: “Each building is a sculpture.” And at the offices of Low architects they are moulding with surfaces and volumes, reducing until the essence of space and material remains.

We all know the not-so-secret recipe for Belgian fries: we double fry. But do you know where we serve them? At one of the many frietkots found on main highways and town squares (reportedly over 5000 in our little country). These traditional fries shops are slowly disappearing from the street view due to strict food regulations and urban planning. Luckily we have the paintings of Gillis Houben to remember us of the strange beauty of a patched up van alongside the road.

Back in the early seventies Gilles, an autodidact painter, started to paint these persistent symbols of a certain Belgitude. The series, titled Home Frit’ Home, depicts fries stands in an almost contradictional way: clean and rigid visuals represent the mishmash of many elements adding up to the quirky charm of a frietkot. Gilles describes his own work as “future nostalgia”. This description may be more accurate then we think, as the majority of the over one-hundred painted fries shops already disappeared.

Let’s not panic yet, Belgium still has the highest density of fries stands in the world (at least we think so). And if there ever would be a time where the term frietkot only raises question marks, then we have the painting of Gilles to remind us of this quirky Belgian landmark.

No, we’re not speaking proverbially, instead we take it literally: to make a bridge that reaches across a space! But it takes more than that to make a great bridge. Advances in design software, construction techniques and innovative materials have given engineers opportunities to focus on original, striking and sometimes whimsical designs that impress, while keeping function in mind. The best fit to this description is Brussels-based engineer office NEY+Partners.

When it comes to architectural striking bridges, NEY+Partners always succeeds in fulfilling the brief. Founder Laurent Ney always seeks a quest for optimal form through the use of forces as raw material. With these elements Laurent creates his striking sculpture-like structures. When we have a look at his extensive bridge portfolio, we see reoccurring elements such as the interplay of forces, geometry, scale, lightness, and scale.

No wonder that you can find these poetical NEY+partner bridges all over Belgian and Europe. And it’ not only the I Love Belgium team that appreciates the work of Ney! Several Belgian architectural offices count on him for the technical aspect of an architectural masterpiece. Below you can find a selection of his bridges, designed and realized by the master (and office) himself. Enjoy! And Laurent, keep on building bridges (yes, pun intended).

Finally we start seeing flowers everywhere in the street and on the fields so that’s why we dedicate this post to master florist Thierry Boutemy who just moved and opened a new shop in Brussels next to our favorite bakery Le Saint-Aulay (remember the gayest bakery in town?).

Boutemy was born and raised in Normandy but he has been living in Belgium for over 15 years. He moved to Brussels because he considers people living in Belgium’s capital more friendly. He would love to have settled in Paris but the city of love was too stressy for him and Brussels was the perfect compromise between a city and a provincial town (and in 1h20 minutes you are in Paris with the train, so Brussels is the perfect base).

After working on Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film Marie Antoinette, Boutemy’s career really kicked off. People from the fashion scene discovered him and soon his phone didn’ stop ringing ever since.

A still from the movie Marie-Antoinette by Sofia Coppola

ILOVEBELGIUM

March 2011 he collaborated with Mario Testino for the Lady Gaga cover of American Vogue and before that he worked together with Lanvin (remember the floral doors from the Lanvin 2007 and 2009 shows), Dries Van Noten (he worked with him for the opening of his Paris shop) and Viktor & Rolf. He also designed Sofia Coppola’s floral decoration for her wedding, so he’s an A-list florist for sure.

Don’t go to him if you’re a fan of orchids or roses because that’s not his cup of tea. He loves messy bouquets with wild flowers. Poppies, wheat stalks,…Boutemy loves the simplicity of bouquets that are not structured, not perfect. Wondering what his favorite flowers are? Peonies! Because they are so rich and generous. But he also loves poppies, buttercups, cornflowers and of course tulips. A Boutemy bouquet seems just like you just picked a fresh bouquet of flowers in a cottage garden, but his touch and sensibility for nature’s design makes gives it just that little extra.

Finally Spring arrived in Belgium and everywhere else in Europe. People are in a good mood which seems to make life so much easier. Bars and restaurants all over our country can put out their terrace because that’s what Belgians like: have an ice cold beer, a glass of wine or why not, a gin & tonic (getting more popular by the day ) and this all in good company, listening to good tunes. On this sunny day we would like to share some of our favorite Belgian tunes of the moment. Because the weather is great, because we are in a good mood and just because we love music. Enjoy!

Compact Disk Dummies are the 2012 winners of Belgium’s biggest rock contest Humo’s Rock Rally. Two brothers Lennert (20) and Janus (18) bring different sounds together: from 80s New Wave to trashy stoner rock to contemporary electropunk, resulting in a ruthless and daring sound, not to be missed live. Their music has been described as “Brutal, a smack in the face, tons of charisma and at least finally something remarkably different”, we just want to dance when we hear The Reeling.

ILOVEBELGIUM

SX is a magnetic indiepop band from Belgium around Stefanie Callebaut and Benjamin Desmet. Together with drummer Jeroen Termote they bring ethereal indiepop. With keyboards, reverb guitars, enchanting drums and a painfully beautiful voice, their waving and vibrating sound results in a performance that keeps arising. In 2012 SX focused on their highly anticipated debut album. They worked together with producer Ben H Allen III (Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, M.I.A., Deerhunter, … ). The latest track Graffiti is pure magic.

ILOVEBELGIUM

The Van Jets are often reviewed as a mash up of David Bowie, Iggy Pop and T. Rex into a delicate mix of violence and melodic beauty. They’ve built up a notorious live reputation, selling out every possible club and billing all major festivals. For their third album Halo, they teamed up with Belgian electro-rock sensation The Subs as their producer, resulting in a whole new fresh sound for the band. While staying loyal to their rock ‘n roll song-based philosophy. The album was recorded at Philippe Zdar’s (Cassius) famous Motor Bass studio. Tchad Blake (The Black Keys, The Dandy Warhols, Tom Waits) mixed the album.

Balthazar is a musically speaken a typically Belgian , a powerful blend of extremes. Edgy yet rhythmic, subdued yet enticing, precise yet enchanting. And intelligent. They just released their new album Rats and the I Love Belgium team was immediately enchanted by the first single they released Do Not Claim Them Anymore. Just watch the entire video and you’ll understand what we are talking about.

ILOVEBELGIUM

What do you get when you put one guy together with four beautiful girls? The answer is The Happy (we think every guy would be happy to have such beautiful colleagues). This five piece came together over a mutual love of vintage musical instruments and a shared record collection. Though they’re a new band, they’re not inexperienced. Their first single Walkman created an instant smile and their now single 218 just creates pure happiness.

Option number 1: you’ll throw it somewhere in a dark corner of a room and let it gather some dust. Option number 2: you reinvent it into a multifunctional desirable and stackable design object. That’s exactly what designer Maarten De Ceulaer did for his Design Academy graduation project four years ago. Today he continues ” The Leather Collection” with brand new edition titled “Chest of Suitcases”.

After his more “traditional” way of stacking, Maarten looked into a new way to rethink these home items in various configurations. In Milan he showcased a range of new storage furniture which could easily transform from a playful storage pile into a nicely stacked line of suitcases. Soft hues and the high end leather immediately set the tone for the luxurious touch and feel.

If you would, you could decorate your interior with Maarten’s re-imagined wardrobe and low table of suitcases, (writing) desk and bench of briefcases, bedside piles, chests and even a mirror. On the other hand, you’re interior could become quite a surrealist place. But isn’t that one of the Belgian cornerstones? The I Love Belgium team just wonders with what other variation Maarten will come up with…

A quirky pineapple-shape handbag caught our eye. What was it? Who was this? It was Sept Bruxelles, the accessory label created by Cécile De Jaegher.

Cécile graduated from the Royal Academy of fine Arts in Antwerp. She has worked for designers such as Jean-Paul Knott, or the Belgian artist Isabelle de Borchgrave. In 2007 she started her own accessory brand: VII Sept Bruxelles, a cheerful answer to the need of various handbags to wear at very different occasions, always respecting the need of joy and beauty, of quality and creativity. The name of the brand has been chosen to emphasize the local production in Brussels and to celebrate number VII being the designers lucky number, as she is the seventh child of a family of seven.

ILOVEBELGIUM

We do not only love the brand because of their surreal designs (there’s not only the pineapple handbag but also the matryoshka doll handbag, the banana bag and even the chicken bag) but we love them even more because the handbags are entirely made in Belgium while the paintings are done by hand in their studio in Brussels. They consider themselves not driven by profit, and they want their success to come from the love of the work, the respect of the people they work with and the quality of the materials that are used. A very contemporary way of doing business, the I Love Belgium team can only applaud.

Fashionistas will know immediately who Natalie is, but for our readers who are less interested in fashion: Natalie Joos is a Belgian casting agent who has been living half of her life in New York. Maybe her last name will ring a bell, the I Love Belgium team already interviewed her sister Evelien who is also living in New York. With her sense of style Natalie was noticed by The Sartorialist, Tommy Ton and other streetstyle photographers.

One day she felt like writing a blog herself and Tales of Endearment was born. Now the world could not only witness her mix-and-match of vintage and high fashion, but they could also read her witty articles and interviews with stylish people from all over the world. In her busy schedule, she found the time to answer some of the questions of the I Love Belgium team.

ILB – Natalie, you’ve been living in NY for years now. If you would give it a ‘percentage’, how much percent would you consider yourself American and how much ‘Belgian’?

I don’t consider myself American at all. I am a New Yorker. There’s a big difference. And I would say I am 50 – 50. Though when I come back to Belgium people stare at me like I’m some exotic bird. And apparently I’ve lost all the Flemish mannerisms.

ILOVEBELGIUM

ILOVEBELGIUMILOVEBELGIUM

ILB – Your a casting agent and you write a blog. Why did you choose the name ‘Tales of Endearment’?

I decided to write a blog because I was bored basically. And I thought: if they can do it, so can I. The name just came by brainstorming for a couple of days.

ILOVEBELGIUM

ILOVEBELGIUM

ILOVEBELGIUM

ILB – What is your top three of American fashion brands and your top three of Belgian brands?

Top 3 American: Proenza Schouler, J Crew, Ralph Lauren

Top 3 Belgian: Dries, Delvaux,…there are so many, this is too difficult!

ILOVEBELGIUM

ILOVEBELGIUM

ILOVEBELGIUM

ILB – Your sense of styling is impeccable is as well as the photography. Are you a perfectionist?

Yes very much so. I’m not easily happy and I always try to push my limits.

ILOVEBELGIUM

ILOVEBELGIUM

ILB – What would you like to achieve with your blog? Any dreams or objectives?

I’d like to be the Creative Director at a brand one day.

ILB – What’s your biggest vintage find you’ve ever found. Can you let us in on a vintage secret? A thrift store, an online shop, a pawn shop,…

I’ve found many great things. The best one would probably this Rudi Gernreich dress. I paid $35 for it while it was $2500 in another store. I don’t really have any secrets. Vintage shoppers are nifty. They don’t leave any stones unturned. There are however many places I have not visited.

ILB – Your waist is as tiny as your sister. Is it a ‘Joos’-family thing? Or do you have other secrets? Any special detox after the holidays?

Haha, funny! I think living in NY is the main secret. There are too many beautiful, skinny people in this city and u can’t be the odd one out. I do Organic Avenue cleanses now and again. Traveling always messes me up.

ILOVEBELGIUM

ILOVEBELGIUM

ILB – And our last question: why do you love Belgium?

I love Belgium for its simplicity. It’s not complicated. It’s quiet and comfortable living. When I come home I can relax.

Last year they set-up their tents in the Brussels subway-station turned-event-location Congres and this year they landed in the new Cultural Centre Brass next to the Wiels. Poppositions is a vivid mix of galleries, performances and talks. Not only the art pops-up but also food and drinks and even books thanks to a mobile cafe by Broer Bretel, a vegetarian conceptual food of pop-up Villa Leopolda and the nomadic bookshop Theophile’s Papers.

ILB – What’s the difference between good and bad art?

I think good art is art that forces you to ask questions, that triggers some emotions or intellectual kick. Good art is visionary. Bad art is decorative, cliché, uninspiring.

ILB – Why is art important?

Well art keeps you away from the trivial and banal. Art brings you back to the essential. It’s a stimulation we need, for individuals and as well as our society in general. It challenges us more than the general media that gives us ready-made info, whereas art gives us the challenge to think more about an issue without giving us direct answers.

ILB – Poppositions is a traveling art fair, will you pop up in other countries too or do you want to keep it local?

When we started, we had in mind to travel around non stop. The idea was to highlight the temporality of fairs but also the pop-up model. We definitely want to continue keeping it local but why not having little brothers and sisters across the world.

ILB – What’s your favorite art work at Poppositions?

I honestly cannot answer this. There is not one artwork I favor above others. We worked in collaboration with curators to select the best works and it worked out pretty well. We all agreed on what was good art amongst all the propositions we received. This year we have an interesting jury who selected the three best artworks with three prizes: an art book by Shelter press, a pop-up exhibition in the financial district in London at Open Plan and a residency and exhibition in NYC at Mr Fine Art.

ILB – Why do you love Belgium?

I love Belgium for so many reasons. I love the fact that it is a place of possibilities giving people the chance to realise projects you wouldn’t dream of elsewhere. I love the modesty and understated attitude and the great quality in art, design and fashion Belgium has to offer. I love the fact that I change language zones every single day. I love the fact that Belgium is so small that you can travel from Charleroi to Antwerp to Ghent to Brussels like you would do between neighbourhoods in Berlin or London.

This time of the year Brussels is flooded with art lovers and art collectors from all over the world. Yes, it’s Art Brussels and thanks to the success and reputation of Belgium’s art mothership a whole series of art events is organized around the city. Thanks to SLICK, the biggest off art fair of Art Brussels, who came to Brussels for the first time last year, the area around WIELS in the commune of Forest has become the real off neighbourhood of Art Brussels.

There’s not only SLICK but also Poppositions, Komplot, the performance festival Experienz, Fondation A Stichting and the Art Loft. Anyone who still claims that the Brussels commune of Forest does not really have an identity can be silenced forever: Forest is officially the art commune of Brussels.

The city council even created a special art walk called Kunstpromenade, to guide everybody through all the different art happenings. Lovers of everything art, the I Love Belgium team already strolled around and asked five simple (up to you to decide) questions to the people who made all this happen. We start with Aude de Bourbon Parme, communication director of SLICK Art Fair.

ILB – What is good art for you?
That’s a trick question because it is very difficult to define a good artist and a good art work. It’s so subjective. Of course it’s important that you are touched by a work of art or that it incites controversy. It also needs to raise questions both personal and universal.

ILB – Why is art important?
Because I believe it can change the world.

ILB – What’s the difference between the French art scene and the Belgian art scene?
An other difficult question. You could also say: what is the difference between a French and Belgian person? In Brussels, we noticed that collectors have very specific opinions on what they like or not. They are also not afraid to ask the price of an art work.

ILB – What’s your favorite art work at SLICK
The one I will buy.

ILB – Why do you love Belgium?
I love to work here because of the sincerity of the art scene and its vitality. I discover all the time and I’ve also met some really interesting people, in the end that’s what I am looking for in life. Projects and ideas can be put in place very smoothly and solutions to problems seem to come very natural. In Belgium, life is sweet but very vivid at the same time.
