Z33, the centre for contemporary art & design in Hasselt holds a showcase for performative trends in contemporary design. This is a worldwide scoop, as it is for the first time that a complete design exhibition will work around the theme of performance! More over, they are not only the first ones to bring several projects together, but they are also the first in history name to this phenomenon! Even design authority Marcus Fairs, founder of the online design journal Dezeen, confirmed this in his latest lecture! Who are we to counter this …
Performance design … what is it? Compare it with what performance was for the art scene in the 60! Generally it is the artist that undertakes the action, in this case not the designer but the object is the centre of attention. For that reason the focus of the expo lies on the production process itself. Instead of looking at the finished product you are invited to look closer at the production process itself. A perfect example is the work “sleeping beauty” of Atelier NL, a lampshade that starts knitting itself when someone turns on the light switch.
So the objects on display focus on the realization as a continuous project affected or formed by either the environment or the specific situation in which they find themselves. As such, processes and performances is a crucial part of Design by Performance. Don’t be surprised when the normally static exhibition space starts to indulge you to participate, act or create! Bringing some, so much needed, unpredictable and spontaneous character to a design exhibition. Therefore the I Love Belgium Team will certainly pay a visit!
Some of the participants include Maarten Baas, Front design, Sofie Lachaert, Studio Libertiny, Tjep, Oscar Diaz …
