Christian Wijnants – FW10

Winter is hitting Belgium hard these days so it’s time for some serious knitwear to keep us warm. We already raved about Chauncey, high end knitwear, classic with a twist, but there’s another knitwear specialist in Belgium: Christian Wijnants.

Born in 1977 in Brussels, Christian moved to Antwerp in 1996 to study fashion design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. After graduating in 2000 he is the laureate of the leading competition for young designers “Festival de Hyères”, where he wins the Grand Prix. After working for Dries Van Noten in Antwerp and Angelo Tarlazzi in Paris, he launched his own brand in 2003.

Christian is especially praised for his knitwear research -he’s also a teaching knitwear at the Antwerp Academy- and feminine, poetic style. His Fall Winter 10 collection totally reflects this style. Using his  friend and muse, Anouck Lepère, he creates a modern fairytale with furry knits, capes and  dresses with prints from Aquarian Odyssey (also the title of the collection), a series of photographs by sixties photographer Don Snyder. Aquarian Odyssey is a photo book about the hippie era, a true delight for anyone wanting to understand what the it was really about. The pictures are geographically divided between New York City (like shots inside the famous Electric Circus), rural communes in New England, and the San Francisco Bay Area (I think that Spencer Tunick was also inspired by some of his work if you look at the composition of certain pictures).

Draped silhouettes in strong earthy shades of terracotta, mustard and saffron, a strong reference to the 60s free love culture but with a modern point of view, Christian doesn’t fall into clichés.
