Belgian Summer music

I LOVE BELGIUM - POPE OF DOPE

Yes we haven’t been that productive the last weeks, but that’s going to change. The I Love Belgium team has been out and about enjoying the Belgian Summer weather (hot hot hot) and looking for new and exciting stories to share with you. Belgium is the place to be for summer festivals, the Werchter festival has been called out to be the best festival in the world several times now but there’s also Couleur Café, Dour, De Lokerse Feesten, Pukkelpop, Brosella, Jazz Middelheim, De Zomer van A, de Gentse Feesten,…

I suppose you understand why it’s difficult to stay inside during the Summer. Belgians love to be outside, have drinks with friends on a crowded terrace, organize barbecues in the garden or daytrip to the Belgian coast. And good music is never far away: live on festival, on your iPod or simply on the radio. The I Love Belgium team made a selection of Belgian Summer tunes that really make us move or make us dream away on a Sunny terrace. Sit back and relax or pump up your volume.

They call him the electronic Prince of Belgium because of his sexy voice and funky music. I’m sure his love for booties (the shoe version, but I’m sure he likes the female version too) and elastic dance moves go along with that title. His new album Ten Danz is a tribute to old skool dance music. I’m sure you will party like it’s 1999.

Villa aka Fredo & Thang have made a remake of the Belgian classic Beats of Love by Nacht und Nebel featuring the New Sins (vocals by Lou Hayter who’s also playing the keyboard with The New Young Pony Club. A fresh make-over for this wonderful Belgian new wave classic. The hands on the album cover spelling A-M-O-R  are the hands of nobody else than…Murielle Scherre, the Ghent lingerie designer of La Fille d’O.

I am the Pope of Dope, I come from Walifornia, dirty south from Belgium, wah, wah wah. The I Love Belgium is sure that every youngster has been singing along with this great tune by the Liège Partyharders Squad vs. The Subs from Ghent. Who says that Flemish and Walloons can’t collaborate?

An established band in Belgium and now also big in Japan. Das Pop has been one of Belgians favourite bands. The perfect-son-in-law-look of singer Bent Van Looy certainly has something to do with that. There fourth album simply titled Das Pop has been piling up hit singles and Never get enough is one of them.

Born in Belgium and then raised in Australia, Wouter De Bakker aka Gotye has been making music since his teens. Learnalilgivinanlovin is a single from his second album Like Drawing Blood, already released in 2006 but only discovered in Belgium last year (!!!).

Stromae (verlan for Maestro) is the revelation of 2010. He’s the perfect Belgian: a typical Flemish name Paul Van Haver (but his mother tongue is French), and born to a Rwandan father and a Belgian mother. His style is new and fresh mixing hip hop with electronic dance music. He looks like a coloured version of Jacques Brel and recites his rhymes as distinct as the master of Belgian French chanson. like Everybody knows Alors on danse (it has been a hit in different European countries) but his new single Te Quiero is screaming nr. 1 again.

Okay, it’s in Dutch but it’s the music that counts. Flip Kowlier is a proud West-Flemish artist singing in his own dialect. Kowlier has a hip hop background (he was an MC with the West-Flemish hip hop crew ‘t Hof van Commerce) but his taste for music is very eclectic. He just released a reggae album and I think he would make Bob Marley proud.
