Belgian fashion goes Gaga

It isn’t since the 1997 Pop Mart U2-tour, when Walter Van Beirendonck designed the costumes (Bono’s muscle-tee is still engraved in our memory), that Belgian avant-garde fashion is so present in the international music scene!

And it’s more then prominent in the world of hip hop. Rihanna didn’t always used to rock a Maison Margiela sheer black, one gloved white leather sleeve, mini dress. In the Pon de Replay music video, she was more club girl than a Peter Pilotto fashion victim. But times have changed and since name dropping is big, we see big international superstars rocking Belgian designer outfits.

I LOVE BELGIUM

Following Rihanna’s example, Beyonce embraced all-time-favourite Margiela, showing of his iconic sunglasses, shoes and accessories. While her lovely husband is rapping “And ain’t nobody fresher, I’m in Maison (Uh) Martin Margiela” … quoting his hit single We Run This Town featuring who else than Rihanna and the biggest fashion victim of them all Kanye West.

But we couldn’t write this article without mentioning the current queen of fashion: Lady Gaga. She made the lace bunny ears big, designed by Belgian talent Laetitia Crahay for Maison Michel. Showed of the feathered antlers of Mouton Collet and kick-started the career of Antwerp fashion academy graduate Emilie Pirlot.

ILOVEBELGIUM

The odd one out is the video of rapster Eve as she does not wear Belgian design, but has it in her setting. The yellow fluorescent plastic LCP lounge chair is designed by Belgian design legend Maarten Van Severen for Kartell.
